The Busan International Motor Show 2006 will kick off Friday (April 28) in Korea's southern port city Busan, featuring state-of-the-art designs of global automakers.

Organizers said 171 companies from 10 countries, including auto parts manufacturers, have set up booths to showcase trends in their respective industries and to promote their latest products during the 10-day motor show.

Automakers from Germany numbered the highest with five including Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Maybach, followed by Japan (four), the U.S. (four), Britain (three) and Sweden (two).

As foreign automakers _ such as Audi, Peugeot, Lexus and Saab _ see their market shares continue to increase in Korea, the third Busan Motor Show is drawing keen attention among motorists.

Foreign automakers will also unveil environment-friendly hybrid cars, such as the Lexus RX400h.

They will showcase 68 models, including sedans, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), convertibles and concept cars. Eight of the 68 cars will be unveiled during the show.

The eight fresh models to be launched in Busan include the New XK Jaguar, the S600L Mercedes-Benz, the Audi S6, Volvo's new C70 T5 and Peugeot's 607Hdi.

Aside from foreign companies' local corporations, foreign-controlled carmakers _ GM Daewoo Auto & Technology, Ssangyong Motor and Renault Samsung Motors _ will also show key products designed to challenge Hyundai and Kia, which control a combined 70 percent of the Korean market.

In a statement, Busan City Mayor Hur Nam-sik said, “Participants will be given the opportunity to look around the emerging auto industry zone that encompasses the southeastern part of Korea.”
