Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and one of the three most beautiful port cities in the world. The municipal government was first established on the 1st of March, 1565. The local economy mainly consists of agriculture (23.5%) and commerce (75.5%), making them the backbone of the city.

The Korean Ambassador to Brazil first proposed the establishment of a sister city relationship on the 8th of May, 1984, with the two cities signing the agreement on the 23rd of September in 1985. The Vice Mayor of Rio de Janeiro and his delegation attended a sister city exchange conference held during the period of Carnival to discuss how to promote exchanges between the two sister cities.

Former Mayor Jung Chae-jin of Busan and former Mayor Marcei yo Nudes Alencar of Rio de Jainero signed an agreement to establish sister city relations in Rio de Jainero.
