□ The Busan Museum of Art will host the BMA Future Museum Forum (hereinafter referred to as ‘the Forum’) at Grand Josun Busan from April 23 to 25, 2025.
○ Coinciding with the museum’s highly anticipated reopening, the Forum seeks to shape a forward-thinking museum model and redefine the publicness of art.
□ Discussions will center on the evolving social functions of museums as art repositories in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the New Cold War, and environmental challenges.
○ Professionals from around the globe will examine concrete strategies for museums of the future and avenues for international collaboration.
○ Key topics encompass: ▲ digitalized collections and borderless sharing platforms, ▲ international technical standards for conserving and restoring media artworks, ▲ democratic, and community-based art projects beyond biennales and fairs, and ▲ environmentally conscious museum practices and operations in the Anthropocene*.
*A proposed epoch in which humans have significantly impacted Earth’s geology and ecosystems
□ Distinguished figures from 17 institutions in 12 countries will take part, including ▲ Elvira Dyangani Ose from the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, Spain, ▲ Brendan McGetrick from the Museum of The Future, the United Arab Emirates, ▲ Philipp Ziegler from the ZKM Karlsruhe, Germany, and ▲ Manabu Yahagi from the Mori Art Museum, Japan.
□ Loop Lab Busan will also be held concurrently with the Forum.
○ Inspired by the acclaimed Loop Barcelona, Loop Lab Busan will be the first of its kind in Asia. Emphasizing horizontal solidarity within communities, it will serve as a global digital media art festival that delves into time and images through exhibitions, forums, and an art fair.
○ The Busan Museum of Art will oversee the exhibitions and forums as well as the art fair, together with A Fluxtion, a Korean cultural planning agency reputed for its innovative programming.
□ Admission to the Forum is free. Pre-registration opened on April 10, 2025 via art.busan.go.kr, with on-site registration also available.
