□ A monumental exhibition titled ‘Nam June Paik, Nam June Paik, and Nam June Paik,’ offering a deep dive into Paik’s transformative journey, is currently being held in galleries 4 and 5 at the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art and will run until March 16th, 2025.
○ Nam June Paik is hailed as the father of media art and one of the most groundbreaking figures of the 20th century. Known for his creative experimentation with performance art, televisions, broadcasting systems, satellites, video installations, and lasers, Paik pushed the boundaries of what art could be. His famous quote, "It's an artist's job to think about the future," encapsulates his visionary approach, which involved embracing emerging technologies and challenging the norms of his time. He conveyed messages of joyful communication and human connection, revolutionizing the art landscape.
□ This retrospective exhibition serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Nam June Paik, an avant-garde innovator who relentlessly pursued new frontiers and foresaw the future more vividly than anyone else. The event is being co-organized by the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nam June Paik Art Center.
○ The collaboration between experts from both organizations will be an essential step towards fostering the growth of museum culture and resource sharing.
□ As the most extensive retrospective in Korea since Paik’s passing, the exhibition features over 160 masterpieces, including early artworks rarely seen by the Korean public, alongside photographs, videos, and archive materials.
○ For the first time in Busan, 87 art pieces, 38 archival items, and 15 films from the Nam June Paik Art Center will be displayed.
○ The global significance of Paik's work is reinforced by loans from renowned institutions, such as the National Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art, Korea; the Ulsan Art Museum; the Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture & Tourism Organization; and the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt.
□ ‘Nam June Paik, Nam June Paik, and Nam June Paik’ will intrigue the audience with the diverse mediums Paik employed, ranging from video art inspired by the Fluxus movement to the laser projects developed before he died in 2006. The exhibition underscores his profound insight as a trailblazer who seamlessly integrated art and technology and fundamentally redefined the trajectory of contemporary art.
