□ As the Busan Concert Hall, Korea’s second vineyard-style classical music facility, was completed last August, Busan Metropolitan City will commence with the process of installing a pipe organ.
○ In October 2022, the city signed a contract with Freiburger, Germany through a foreign purchase bid via the Public Procurement Service.
○ The pipe organ has 4,406 pipes, 62 stops, and four keyboards.
<About the Busan Concert Hall>
ㅇ Location: in Busan Citizens Park
ㅇ Size: One basement and three above-ground floors, total floor area of 19,862 square meters, 2,000-seat Auditorium, 400-seat Chamber Hall
ㅇ Feature: The building exemplifies a vessel sailing on the rolling waves and is home to a hall with a vineyard-style seating arrangement.
□ The pipe organ was shipped from Germany in August and is scheduled to arrive at the Port of Busan on October 27th. The city plans to finish the full installation by February of next year. The pipe organ will make its public debut at an opening concert after going through voicing and several inspections.
○ The design of the pipe organ was determined in January 2023. Beginning in February 2023, it was assembled and tested in Germany, with the pieces of the dismantled pipe organ finally getting delivered to Busan on October 27th, 2024.
○ Customs clearance, reassembling, and voicing will require four months. The city expects the 28-month project—from design to installation—to smoothly conclude in time.
□ The pipe organ in the Busan Concert Hall will be the first in non-capital regions. Often referred to as ‘the king of instruments,’ the pipe organ is a symbol of cultural richness and heritage. Thus, its presence will give the Busan Concert Hall a reputation as one of the top venues offering the best classical music experience, enhancing Busan's cultural status in the world. The Busan Concert Hall will not only contribute to the opportunity for citizens to experience cultural enjoyment, but also promises an irresistible performance stage for musicians.
○ The pipe organ, a colossal structure standing nine meters high and stretching sixteen meters wide, will be placed on the wall behind the choir stalls.
○ Currently, there are three pipe organs in Korea: the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts (installed in 1978), the LOTTE Concert Hall (installed in 2016), and the Bucheon Arts Center (installed in 2023).
