Busan Metropolitan City, a UNESCO City of Film, Has Been Named Chair

□ Busan Metropolitan City is now the appointed UNESCO Chair on Film under the UNESCO Creative Cities Network program.

○ Since 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network has endorsed cities devoted to accomplishing urban growth and cultural diversity by fostering the culture industry based on cultural assets and creativity.

○ This designation is especially meaningful as Busan Metropolitan City was promoted to lead the network ten years after it became the first Asian UNESCO City of Film in 2014. Its contributions as the Vice Chair of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the Film category from March 2021 was also recognized.


□ Busan Metropolitan City is slated to work alongside Bristol, the United Kingdom, the Vice Chair, for two years from July 2024 to June 2026.

○ During the UNESCO Cities of Film Subnetwork Meeting on July 3, 2024 (July 2, 2024, 16:30 local time), Busan Metropolitan City was unanimously elected the Chair.

○ The official announcement will be made at the closing ceremony of the 16th UNESCO Creative Cities Network Annual Conference on July 5, 2024.

○ The 16th UNESCO Creative Cities Network Annual Conference convened on July 1, 2024, in Braga, Portugal.


□ As the Chair, Busan Metropolitan City will be able to consolidate its position within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and play a more diverse and influential role.

○ The Chair, the representative of the Cities of Film, will also be a member of the UCCN Steering Committee and be involved in making crucial decisions about UNESCO’s activities, forging subnetwork relationships, and creating joint projects.


□ Beginning in 2004, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has operated the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in seven fields: design, crafts & folk arts, gastronomy, media arts, film, music, and literature. As of 2023, 350 cities from 112 countries have engaged in cultural exchanges.

○ UNESCO’s Cities of Film comprise 26 cities from 22 countries, including Cannes, France, Rome, Italy, Sydney, Australia, and Bristol, the United Kingdom.
