Busan Hosts "World of Coffee & World Barista Championship Busan"

□ The city of Busan announced that it will jointly host the "World of Coffee Busan & World Barista Championship Busan 2024" with the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) from May 1st to 4th at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 1.

○ This event, which brings two global coffee events to the city, was organized to spread the brand of 'Coffee City, Busan', discover and nurture local talent, and foster emerging companies in the coffee industry .

○ "World of Coffee" is a globally renowned specialty coffee exhibition annually held in Europe to promote the development of the global coffee industry, cultivate talent, and support the specialty coffee community. "World of Coffee Busan" is the Asian touring version of this competition, making its Asian debut in Busan.

○ The "World Barista Championship" is famous as a springboard for becoming a global coffee star, with winners like Paul Bassett in 2015 and James Hoffmann in 2016. In 2019, barista Jeon Joo-yeon became the first Korean to win, elevating the status of Korean coffee.

□ "World of Coffee Busan" is a business-to-business (B2B) event where over 250 leading domestic and international coffee companies will showcase coffee-related products, technologies, and services, and is expected to attract around 12,000 global attendees, including industry professionals from over 70 countries.

○ In particular, at the dedicated exhibition area 'Roaster Village', coffee and brands from domestic and international roastery cafes will be showcased.

○ Alongside this, various experiential seminar programs will be available, including the 'SCA Community Lounge' for artisans to exchange ideas with global coffee professionals, as well as a 'cupping room' where citizens and coffee enthusiasts visiting Busan, can experience and evaluate diverse domestic and international coffees, thereby helping to foster a budding coffee culture.

○ In addition, a Busan Promotion Hall will be set up during this exhibition. Under the theme 'Busan, the first city in Korea to drink coffee (1884, Haeeun Illok)', the Busan Promotion Hall will allow visitors to closely examine the connections between coffee, cities, technology, and sustainability through the storytelling of the cities we live in and the coffee we drink.

□ After being held at COEX in Seoul in 2017, the "World Barista Championship" will take place in Busan after seven years, where baristas representing 60 countries will compete for the championship.

○ Along with the championship to select the world's top barista, engaging sessions will be planned for participants, including ‘Brew Bar’ where attendees can taste coffee brewed by renowned baristas.

○ Additionally, networking and fellowship events, like the 'Barista Party' are also planned for participants of the "World Barista Championship".

□ Citizens and coffee enthusiasts who wish to attend the "2024 World of Coffee & World Barista Championship Busan" can purchase discounted early-bird tickets on Interpark until April 28th.
