□ The city of Busan has announced that in December 2023 they completed the shaping of the life-friendly forests (indoor gardens) at the Busan Central Bus Terminal, the Visitor Center of Busan Citizens Park, and the Suyeong and Dongnae Metro Stations.

○ The indoor garden project was promoted through a collaboration among the city of Busan, the Busan Infrastructure Corporation, and the Busan Transportation Corporation to improve the environment of public facilities and to provide green rest areas.

□ The life-friendly forests (indoor gardens) offer pleasant indoor environments to citizens using public facilities by reducing fine dust, improving air quality, and offering green spaces.

○ Busan constructed the indoor gardens in four places: the Busan Central Bus Terminal, the Visitor Center of Busan Citizens Park, and two subway stations (Suyeong and Dongnae) in consideration of spatial characteristics, safety, the dimensions of the indoor spaces, and users’ mobility.

○ 30,418 shrubs and flowering plants were planted in a 101m2 horizontal area along with 604m2 of vertical garden (walls, pillars) areas with a contribution of 1.4 billion KRW from the Korea Forest Service’s government expenditure.

○ The life-friendly forests in all four venues are currently open to all citizens.

□ The Mayor of Busan, Park Heung-joon, said, “I expect further improvements to the dull image of indoor spaces, public facilities’ environments, and indoor air quality by expanding green spaces through the construction of indoor gardens.” He added, “The city of Busan will endeavor to expand green spaces where citizens can feel and enjoy greenery in more and more places by constructed green areas that connect indoor spaces through a continuous shaping and expansion of indoor gardens.”
