The city of Busan announced that the 2023 Korea National Barista Championship (KNBC) will be held at the Grand Ballroom, BEXCO Convention Hall over three days from April 23 to April 25.
Since Busan and the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) signed an MOU in November of last year to foster the local coffee industry, the Busan KNBC will be the first-ever non-Seoul Metropolitan Area city to host the event as a result of consultations with the SCA Korean Chapter.
The Korea Coffee Championship (KCC), whose purpose is to select Korean representatives to participate in the World Coffee Championship (WCC) organized by the SCA, consists of six events. The top event, the KNBC, is an event in which competitors make 12 cups of coffee for 15 minutes using espresso machines.
The winner of the 2023 KNBC will take part in the World Barista Championship held in Athens, Greece this June.
During the championship event, the SCA Market, a specialty coffee event of the SCA Korean Chapter, is also expected to be held to show Busan’s great passion for coffee.
Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon said, “It is really meaningful to host the 2023 KNBC, an event to select Korean representatives to participate in the WBC. This is the most prestigious and popular event of its kind, and for the first time ever it will be held in Busan, a non-Seoul Metropolitan Area city. Busan’s status as a coffee city will be elevated further, and we will endeavor to make Busan a cultural coffee city and the coffee industry’s hub city.”
