- In the age of climate change, let’s lower the Earth’s temperature with the Expo.

Busan Launches the ‘Greencle’ Challenge Campaign to Attract the 2030 World Expo to Busan

The city of Busan has announced that it will launch the ‘Greencle’ Challenge Campaign to attract the 2030 World Expo to Busan. The events will happen at Gwanghwamun in Seoul and Busan Station in Busan over 11 days, from March 30 to April 9.

‘Greencle’ is a mixed of “green”, referring to the environment, and “bicycle.” The Greencle Challenge is a cycling game in which participants enjoy watching a large 75-inch DID panel while riding a stationary bicycle and generating electricity by pedaling.

As they generate electricity by pedaling the bicycle, participants can see a gauge on the left pedal indicating that the Earth’s temperature is going down. Participants who “travel” the furthest in 90 seconds can win the game.

The Greencle campaign is part of the national campaign* to bolster Busan’s bid for the World Expo under the theme, “Stop Climate Change with the Expo”. The Greencle Challenge will also allow participants to experience the Expo’s main theme, “Transforming our world, navigating toward a better future” during the campaign for Expo 2030, as well as other subthemes used to welcome the BIE Enquiry Mission in early April.

* 1. Greencle Challenge (April and June), 2. Expo Marine Center (April ~ October), 3. Green Wave (April ~ September)

《Theme and Subthemes of the 2030 Busan World Expo》

□ (Theme) Transforming our World, Navigating Toward a Better Future

- A fundamental transformation in the relationship among humans, nature, technology, and society is necessary to resolve global problems, including the Covid-19 pandemic, climate and environmental crises, and the bipolarization of society, and to head towards a better future.

□ (Subthemes)

① Sustainable Living with Nature

- Building sustainable living standards for humanity through the natural restoration of recognizing new climate systems and achieving a carbon-neutral society rather than a society solely focused on indiscriminate development.

② Technology for Humanity

- Realizing a society that mutually develops relationships between technology and humanity, so that all humans can enjoy technological advancement benefits in the rapidly transforming digital age

③ Platform for Caring and Sharing

- Bringing forth a society that can resolve bipolarization in areas such as generational differences, digital disparities and conventional industries, as well as between developed and developing countries, all the while caring and sharing together

The campaign takes place at three venues: Seoul Gwanghwamun Plaza (Mar. 30 ~ Apr. 3), Seoul COEX K-pop Plaza (Apr. 4 ~ Apr. 9), and Busan Station Plaza (Mar. 30 ~ Apr. 9). A participatory citizens’ campaign will be launched, including the Greencle Challenge Experience, Renewable Energy Experience, Introduction to the World Expo, and an online petition to support Busan’s bid for the World Expo 2030.

During the campaign period and following the event, electricity generated through the Greencle Challenge is to be donated to those underprivileged through NAVER’s Happy Bean Good Action.

As part of the renewable energy experience program offered during the campaign, participating citizens can charge their cellphone by rolling a piezoelectric pad with their feet. In the online petition event, people can show their support on the online page* of the official website for the 2030 Busan World Expo using tablet PCs placed in the signing booth.

Busan plans to offer gifts such as strap key rings and reusable bags to visitors who experienced all the prepared programs on a first-come, first-served basis. In consideration of the Greencle Challenge event’s purpose, a reusable modular booth will be put in place to reduce waste. Busan plans to host all programs in a similar eco-friendly manner.

Following the Greencle Challenge Campaign, Busan will promote the Green Wave and Expo Marine Center events starting in April as part of the campaign theme, “Stop Climate Change with Expo”.

Green Wave aims to stop climate change by photographing simple wave behavior, similar to the butterfly effect in which a trivial behavior may bring about an enormous change. Photos will be presented on SNS, which is yet another campaign to support and cheer on Busan’s bid for the Expo.

On April 1, the proclamation ceremony, in which all citizens will show their support by doing the wave, will be held at Lotte World Busan. The city actively plans to promote the Green Wave through diverse events, as well as effective content created by influencers and supporters so that all citizens will be able to partake.

At the Expo Marine Center, installed in April at the Seoul Lotte World Aquarium, people can come to understand the seriousness of marine pollution and climate change through diverse exhibitions. The aim of these events are to promote the imperative need for Busan to bid for the Expo in order to seek out solutions and create a sustainable environment here on Earth.

Busan’s Mayor, Park Heong-joon, said, “Busan plans to apply eco-friendly technology and vigorously use green energy to make the World Expo 2030 carbon-neutral.” He asked for loud cheers and support for Busan to succeed in attracting the Expo, explaining, “With the visit of the BIE Enquiry Mission, I hope many citizens will participate in the Greencle Challenge event to let the world know about our purpose and vision.”

Meanwhile, the Greencle Challenge Campaign is scheduled to be held once more in June for 10 days.
