Busan has unveiled its new city brand!

At 2 p.m. on March 10, the Busan City Branding Committee announced the selection of its final City Identity (CI) and Brand Identity (BI) designs from among three candidates.

The selected designs are three-dimensional (3D) logos combining AI-produced images. The City Identity (CI) mark, with Busan’s English initials ‘B’ and ‘S’ used as motifs, is Korea’s first design that uses colors and angles to create a 3D image. For the Brand Identity (BI), “Busan is good” incorporates Korean text to express the original meaning.

The selected designs won the greatest number of votes and support in citizens’ design preference surveys regarding the final three candidate choices. The designs gained popularity thanks to their 3D designs, their differentiation and unique color schemes, as well as overall visual presentation.

The results of the city’s on- and offline surveys, conducted from Feb. 28 to Mar. 8, 2023, are as follows:

▲Design Draft 1 won the largest number of votes (41.7% - 15,458) from among 3733 participants in the online preference survey. ▲This draft also won the largest number of votes (39.4% - 9286) from among 23,552 participants in the offline preference survey, receiving a total of 24,744 votes from the citizens of Busan.

* Design Draft 2, symbolizing Busan’s iconic diversity, received a total of 17,695 votes (online 10,429/offline 7266)

* Design Draft 3, symbolizing Busan’s role as a gateway city, received a total of 18,146 votes (online 11,146/offline 7000)

The Busan City Branding Committee’s announcement clearly reflects the citizens’ opinions and the decision was made to adopt the 3D logos as Busan’s new city brand designs.

In addition, results from the “travelling polling station”, which visited high schools and universities to find out the preferences of the generations that will lead Busan’s future, showed that teens and young adults (in their 20s) also preferred Design Draft 1.

* The high school and university preference survey results closed with 2334 votes for Design Draft 1, 1787 votes for Design Draft 2, and 1344 votes for Design Draft 3 for a total of 5465 votes.

Now, after five months of careful work, starting in November of last year, the city brand design selection is complete and the city of Busan can begin its journey towards implementing its new brand. This follows the participation of about 40,000 citizens in the selection of the city slogan representing Busan, and about another 60,000 citizens participating in the design preference survey. The creation of its new brand is therefore based on the participation of a total of 100,000 Busan citizens.

Busan Mayor, Park Heong-joon, thanked the 100,000 citizens for their participation in the city’s journey toward the new brand. He commented that the new brand, created through this well-timed brand renewal campaign as the city’s standing in the world is changing and global attention is increasing, “would raise citizens’ pride and be used to receive recognition for the city’s external value in an effort to promote it.” He also stressed that in line with the meaning of “Busan is good,” the city would strive to truly transform into a global hub city in which citizens can be happy with the results of this renewed brand.

Busan will unveil Korea’s first 3D City Identity (CI) logo and its Brand Identity sculpture during the “City Brand Proclamation Ceremony” to be held at BEXCO Convention Hall, on March 21.
