Coffee-specialized street takes shape in Yeongdo, a Treasure Island of Coffee!
A coffee-specialized street will be created in Yeongdo, the starting point of the Busan shipbuilding industry and a treasure island of coffee.
Busan City Hall announced plans to develop a 600m section of Bongnaenaru-ro around the Muryangjang (Lighters Wharf) area in Bongnae-dong, Yeongdo-gu (from the lower part of Busan Bridge to Dae Sun Shipbuilding & Engineering) into a coffee-specialized street.
More than 90% of green coffee beans in Korea are imported and distributed in Busan, making the city a roastery hub with nationwide brand power. Since 2019, when Jeon Joo-yeon won the World Barista Championship (WBC), the city has been considered a "coffee city," producing champions such as Moon Heon-gwan, the 2022 World Cup Tasters Championship (WCTC) winner.
*Import volume of coffee in 2020: 176,000 tons. Import volume of coffee imported via the Port of Busan in 2020: 167,000 tons (95%).
The coffee-specialized street is slated to be created around Muryangjang in Bongnae-dong. Mumyeong Ilgi, a once abandoned factory turned cultural complex space and Momos Coffee, a café where the coffee-making process can be seen firsthand, are on board. After the successful November 2021 "Yeongdo Coffee Festival," the area has positioned itself as the hub of coffee.
Additionally, Busan City Hall has focused on reshaping Bongnaenaru-ro into a coffee-specialized street in order to create a coffee city, and thereby making the area a popular tourist locale.
The coffee-specialized street will be developed as a walking-friendly area in connection with the 15-minute city policy. Safety and convenience measures will be implemented for pedestrians by reducing the road width and expanding the sidewalk. The streetscape will be improved with new road designs. Various sites will be improved using art installations, such as sculptures and landscape lighting.
