The City of Busan has announced that Europe's biggest hackathon (a mixing of "hacking" and "marathon") organizer Junction is hosting its first continent-scale event in Busan under the banner "Junction Asia 2022."
Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon, Junction CEO Akseli Aho from Finland and Lee Hyun-sae, the head of Junction's Seoul-based operator Shift, agreed in May to host the event from August 19th to 21st at BEXCO and signed a memorandum of understanding at Busan City Hall through video link.
Hackathon combines the words ‘hack’ and ‘marathon’. Hack refers to the experimental and exploratory creative process without any rigid specifications. It’s about understanding the technology at hand to explore the art of the possible. Junction is the brainchild of a startup orientation student group at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland. "Slush," a global annual startup and tech event in Helsinki that attracts talent and entrepreneurs from across the world, was also launched by the same group in 2008.
The ‘JUNCTION’ hackathon has taken place in ten cities, including Seoul, under the title of ‘JunctionX’, but JUNCTION ASIA 2022 in Busan will be the first hackathon to be held covering a specific continent.
JUNCTION ASIA 2022 in Busan will take place from August 19th to August 21st, 2022 over three days at BEXCO.
The event will be comprised of workshops to solve a hackathon challenge proposed by the organizer, team-building networking between participants, ideation and development, as well as side events like mentoring sessions about launching and operating startups. Event registration is scheduled to begin in July 2022.
