The number of COVID-19 cases is soaring among teens aged 12 to 17 years who have passed a certain time after they have completed their COVID-19 primary series vaccination, driving up the number of critically ill and severe patients and deaths. To protect them from severe illness with COVID-19 including hospitalizations and death, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) provides information on the booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine for foreign teens aged 12 to 17 years staying in Korea.

Eligible recipients

Foreign teens aged 12 to 17 years who have passed 3 months since they have completed their COVID-19 primary series vaccination in or outside of Korea. It is highly recommended for teens at high risk to get a booster shot.

Teens at high risk include those with::

Chronic lung disease, Chronic heart disease, Chronic liver disease, Chronic kidney disease, Neuromuscular disease

Diabetes, Obesity, and those who are immunocompromised (user of immunosuppressive medications)

Teens with chronic diseases staying in public facilities such as social welfare facilities to have treatment.

Vaccination is recommended for teens aged 12 to 17 years with the above high risk medical conditions if their doctor advises them to be vaccinated.

It is not recommended for teens who have already had COVID-19 to receive a booster shot.

Vaccine Type and Interval between Vaccine Doses

The Pfizer vaccine will be provided for a booster shot.

Eligible recipients can get a booster shot 3 months (90 days) after they have completed their COVID-19 primary series vaccination. However, those teens with a weakened immune system can receive a booster at an interval of two months.

Those who have a weak immune system are able to arrange the interval by submitting a doctor’s opinion letter issued by a health facility to their competent public health center.

Vaccination Schedule and Location

Eligible recipients can schedule a booster appointment from March 14 and receive a booster on a selected date from March 21.

Regardless of health insurance status, eligible recipients can receive a booster shot at designated medical institutions, public health centers or vaccination centers.

How to Make an Vaccination Appointment

If you were vaccinated in Korea

Registered foreigners: You can make a vaccination appointment online or by phone for yourself or on behalf of someone else, just like how you scheduled your primary vaccination appointments.

Online: Visit https://ncv.kdca.go.kr and make an appointment through the COVID-19 vaccination booking system.

Phone: Contact KDCA call center at ☏ 1339 or your local government call center.

Same-day appointments available: Call a medical institution or public health center to confirm vaccine availability and if confirmed, you can be vaccinated on the same day as the appointment from March 14.

Signing up for the reserve list through SNS is only available for ones ages 14 and older.

Unregistered Foreigners (incl. illegal residents): You can make a vaccination appointment by phone or visiting a public health center or medical institution with your temporary management number that you received for your COVID-19 primary vaccination.

A ID card, passport or residence card is not required to obtain a temporary code.

If you were vaccinated outside of Korea (incl. short-term travelers staying in Korea for less than 90 days)

Visit a public health center near you and bring your ID card. Request a temporary management number and register your international vaccination records. You can then make a booster shot appointment by phone or visiting a public health center or medical institution.

To ensure the safety of vaccination and monitor adverse reactions, a parent or legal guardian must accompany their children when they get vaccinated.

(A parent or legal guardian needs to fill out a COVID-19 vaccination report after identity verification at the medical institution where their children receive the vaccine)

In the case that a parent or legal guardian is unable to accompany their children, an adolescent COVID-19 vaccination consent form and the COVID-19 vaccination report must be completed by a parent or legal guardian in advance and have their children submit the two documents to a health facility where they get vaccinated.
