Four years after becoming an Oscar®-qualifying festival, the Busan International Short Film Festival (BISFF) has now also become a qualifying festival for both the Premios Goya and the Canadian Screen Awards / Prix Écrans Canadiens. It is the first festival in Korea to achieve this kind of recognition, and one of the very few such events in Asia.
The Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España (Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain) was created on January 8th, 1986. Each year, the Academia celebrates quality Spanish cinema with the presentation of the Premios Goya, or Goya Awards, to the best professionals in each of the technical and creative specialty categories. These include three short films categories: Mejor Cortometraje de Ficción (Best Fiction Short Film), Mejor Cortometraje Documental (Best Documentary Short Film), Mejor Cortometraje de Animación (Best Animated Short Film).
Since 2013, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television / Académie Canadienne du Cinéma et de la Télévision produces the Canadian Screen Awards / Prix Écrans Canadiens, has been bringing together the screen-based industry annually to celebrate the country’s top talent in the film, television and digital sectors at Canadian Screen Week. The Canadian Academy delivers awards for short films in the following three categories: Best Live Action Short Drama, Best Short Documentary, Best Animated Short.
While these qualifications may solely benefit Spanish and Canadian filmmakers who will henceforth be selected in International categories at upcoming editions, this does add to BISFF’s growing reputation both in Korea and abroad, and helps cement its relevance in the global film festival circuit (other festivals on these qualifying lists include Cannes, Clermont-Ferrand, Locarno, Oberhausen, Palm Springs, Sundance...). This also keeps the festival’s relationship with Spain and Canada going, as both countries were chosen for its flagship ‘Guest Country Program’ in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Their embassies in Korea also count among some of the festival's most supportive cultural partners.

As of July 2021, the BISFF’s YouTube channel recorded 270,000 subscribers, which is highest among the YouTube channels of major international film festivals worldwide.
At 100,000 subscribers, if the channel passes certain qualifications, including an active google account, no unresolved community guidelines or copyright strikes and more, YouTube awards the "Silver Creator Award."
