Republic of Korea Submits Bid to Host 2030 World Expo in Busan

Park Heong-joon, the Mayor of Busan and Yoo Myung-hee, the Minister for Trade and Head of the Bid Planning Office for the World Expo 2030 Busan submitted a letter of candidature on behalf of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea to the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) to host the World Expo 2030 in Busan on June 23, 2021 in Paris, France.


It was Busan Mayor Park’s first foreign trip (June 21 to 24th) since becoming Mayor of Busan in April. Mayor Park marked the start of a long road to attract the World Expo 2030 to Busan by submitting a letter of candidature to the BIE, which will build on the momentum Busan and the nation’s future development. Mayor Park also visited Station F, the biggest startup campus in Europe, and global luxury group LVMH to establish a bridgehead for Busan-based creative companies to enter France.

The submission of the letter of candidature for World Expo 2030 Busan with Yoo Myung-hee, Minister for Trade and Head of the Bid Planning Office for World Expo 2030 Busan, was made on June 23, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the BIE office in Paris.

The letter includes the theme of World Expo 2030 Busan, “Transforming Our World, Navigating toward a Better Future”, and expresses the strong desire of the ROK government and Busan to host the World Expo 2030 from May 1 to October 31, 2030 for six months around the North Port in Busan Metropolitan City. After submitting the letter, the delegation met with Dimitri Kerkentzes, Secretary General of BIE, and Busan Mayor Park conveyed his strong aspirations to host the World Expo 2030 in Busan.


The BIE plans to receive applications through October 29, 2021. The host city for World Expo 2030 is set to be announced in November 2023 after the project examination phase of each candidature and a vote by BIE member states gathering as the General Assembly.
