The City of Busan announced that it has implemented enhanced COVID-19 prevention and control guidelines for the public transport sector, which include opening windows when the air conditioning is running on local buses and village/neighborhood buses in Busan starting May 13, 2020.
Due to early warmer temperatures, the demand for air conditioning on buses has increased while the anxiety surrounding the spread of COVID-19 still exists. Therefore, the guidelines aims to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 related anxiety.
The city had previously banned buses from operating air conditioners with the windows open to save energy. However, the city announced the new guidelines to prevent droplet density from becoming higher within closed spaces on buses in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The enhanced COVID-19 prevention guidelines on local buses and village/neighborhood buses includes: requiring bus drivers to wear face masks, offering hand sanitizer to bus passengers, cleaning and disinfecting buses every day, and opening windows for ventilation when the air conditioning is on. These measures will remain in effect until the COVID-19 crisis goes away.
