White Porcelain Jar in Busan Museum’s Collection Designated as a Treasure

The City of Busan has announced that the ‘White Porcelain Jar’ (Busan Tangible Cultural Property No.113 designated on May 17, 2012) was designated as a state-designated cultural property (Treasure No. 2064) on April 23, 2020. It becomes the 52nd treasure in Busan.
It was donated by the late Hyeon Su-myeong (1922~1977), Chairman of Dongyang Rubber Industry on February 28, 1978. He was the first person to donate about 60 paintings and calligraphy works, and ceramics when the Busan Museum opened in 1978. His donation laid the groundwork for the museum’s collection of relics.

The designated white porcelain jar is presumed to be produced in the Gwanyo (the official kiln for the royal court) in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It has a height of 52.8 centimeters, a mouth diameter of 20.8 centimeters, and a foot diameter of 19.1 centimeters. This large white porcelain jar’s shape has a slight asymmetry between its left and right side, but it is natural and imposing, and the white glaze with a light blue color is evenly applied to show its elegance when viewed in its entirety.
The white porcelain jar in the Busan Museum’s collection is an important example that shows that the white porcelain techniques from the royal kiln reached a mature stage at the time, and can be regarded as a representative work in terms of the size and techniques among the white porcelain jars known during the late Joseon Dynasty.
It can be evaluated as an important artifact in the history of Joseon based on its rarity as a large-sized jar, completeness with little damage or repair, rational molding, refined glaze, and excellent level of ceramic firing techniques. Therefore, it has value to be managed and preserved as a treasure.
