Busan City and AWS Strengthen Cooperation on Smart City Initiatives and Public Sector Innovation

On July 25, 2019, the Busan Metropolitan City and Amazon Web Services (AWS) signed a new agreement to develop smart city initiatives and foster public sector innovation at the Busan Cloud Innovation Center (CIC).
Based on the success of the startup initiative made through a March 2016 MoU between the city of Busan and AWS, this new agreement enhances their cooperation.
The signing ceremony took place with the participation of Vice Mayor for Economic Affairs Yoo Jae-soo, Regional Managing Director for AWS’s Global Public Sector APAC and Japan Peter Moore, and AWS’s Global Head of Cloud Innovation Centers Ben Butler.
The main terms of the 5-year agreement include:
▲ collaboration on Busan smart city initiatives to solve urban problems such as traffic, public security, health and well-being, logistics, and the environment
▲ expansion of Busan CIC operations
▲ enhanced promotion of cloud-based startups
▲ expansion of training programs to develop cloud professionals
▲ introduction of internship programs for local college students to gain experience by applying AWS cloud technology to business projects and public sector challenges.
Opened in November 2016, the Busan CIC was the first of seven CIC initiatives around the world supported by AWS Worldwide Public Sector and the only initiative to be hosted by a local government agency. This global network of Cloud Innovation Centers powered by AWS creates the opportunity for collaboration, accelerating innovation in public sector organizations and helping to make the world a better place.
The Busan CIC has identified and supported promising startups, and over the past three years it has provided cloud business consultations to 186 Busan-based companies and trained over 800 cloud professionals.
The CIC has supported 65 startup members, who have increased their sales by KRW 16 billion and added 150 employees, helping to revitalize the local economy.
