In its 17th run this year, the Busan International Seafood & Fisheries Expo 2019 (BISFE) will be held from November 6 (Wednesday) through 8 (Friday) at BEXCO’s Exhibition Center 1 (all halls) under the slogan “Future of Seafood & Fisheries, BISFE.”

Hosted by Busan Metropolitan City and supervised by BEXCO, the Korea Fishery Trade Association, and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperative, this year’s BISFE will be comprised of 1,100 booths representing 420 companies from 27 countries. The expo is sponsored by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korea Fisheries Associations, and Korea Overseas Fisheries Associations.

Certified by the Union des Foires Internationales (UFI) and designated as a high-potential expo by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for 11 consecutive years, the BISFE is the largest trade show dedicated to the fishing industry in Korea and one of the three largest of its kind in Asia. It will be held in all halls of Exhibition Center 1, making it even bigger in scale than last year’s expo, and is expected to be an opportunity for “fishery resource diplomacy”—as in previous years—thanks to the participation of multiple countries and vice-ministerial and ministerial-grade officials from overseas governments. The BISFE will be comprised not only of pavilions such as the “Seafood” and “Fisheries Equipment” pavilions that give visitors a clear overview of the latest fishery-related information and trends but also the “Fisheries Startup Investment Support and Marine Biotechnology” pavilion to promote investment and entrepreneurial efforts in the industry while also introducing products and research outcomes related to new biomarine materials.

There will also be several special pavilions on a diverse range of fishery-related areas, including the “Smart Farming” pavilion (featuring smart farming technologies that incorporate IT), “Halal Seafood” pavilion (information on Halal certification and Halal seafood), a pavilion promoting mackerel (the official fish of Busan), and a pavilion on seafood for institutional food servicing. In particular, to celebrate the hosting of the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit (November 25 to 26), there will be the “ASEAN-Korea Special Pavilion” and various auxiliary events to attract visitors, including the ASEAN-Korea Fishery Strategy Seminar and ASEAN-Korea Seafood Cooking Contest.

Also, this year’s “Trade Meeting with Overseas Buyers” will be held for all three days of the expo (longer than last year’s trade meeting), attracting buyers from approximately 100 fishery companies worldwide, in order to offer more opportunities for Korean companies to develop domestic and international import/export routes and engage in more inter-corporate exchanges.Concurrent events will include the Korean Aquaculture Workshop, Busan Fisheries Policy Forum, and Dietitian Workshop. Various fringe events, such as new product promotions and a seafood cooking contest, are expected to provide visitors with a wide range of things to see and do.
