Busan Strengthens Global Design Competitiveness with Standardized Public Facility Designs

□ Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) has created design standards for public facilities to elevate urban aesthetics and citizen convenience.

○ Acknowledging the importance of public design in response to an evolving urban environment, we prioritized three types of public facilities with urgent needs and broad impacts.

○ A citywide survey was conducted across 16 gus and guns last year, followed by outsourced design services and final approval from the Public Design Committee.

□ The newly established guidelines will apply to bus stops, manhole covers, and signage—for notices and walkways, focusing on user convenience, functionality, and seamless integration into the cityscape.

○ Bus stops will have a modular structure that is easily adaptable for different locations with flexible expansion and modification options; high-visibility LED displays for bus stop names; five shades of gray—matching the city logo—selected to blend with the surroundings; and universal accessibility features such as emergency bells, voice guides, Braille boards, and QR codes to accommodate persons with disabilities.

○ Manhole covers will be embossed with the city logo, with sidewalks and roads differentiated. Concrete manhole covers in sidewalks will be made from the same materials as sidewalks for a harmonious look, whereas cast iron manhole covers in roads will have a textured, slip-resistant surface for enhanced safety.

○ The design of signage for notices and walkways will incorporate Busan’s landscape and branding colors. Typography-based logos will be used to raise awareness and readability.

□ We intend to eliminate inconsistent infrastructure designs and streamline the city’s visual identity as a global hub.

○ Previously, public amenities were designed with varied patterns, colors, and materials by each municipality, making it difficult to build a cohesive Busan.

○ This project marks a crucial step toward upholding consistency in public spaces and is expected to help prevent unnecessary expenses on separate design efforts across municipalities.

□ Moving forward, we plan to register the new designs within the first half of the year and distribute blueprints and relevant references to all 16 municipalities.
