Busan Metropolitan City Ranks Sixth in Asia in Global Liveability Index for the Second Consecutive Year

□ Busan Metropolitan City has once again proven its commendable livability standards by securing the sixth spot among Asian cities for two straight years in the 2024 Global Liveability Index, compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, a renowned research and analysis entity in the United Kingdom.

○ The Economist Intelligence Unit within the Economist Group, a global media company, conducts a comprehensive evaluation of living conditions in major cities across the world and publishes the Global Liveability Index Report each year.

○ The Global Liveability Index is composed of five key criteria: stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education and infrastructure. The Economist Intelligence Unit released the 2024 report on June 26, 2024.


□ In 2024, Busan Metropolitan City scored 87 points overall, getting into the high 80s for the second year running, and continued to hold sixth place in Asia.

○ Busan Metropolitan City’s effective branding has led to remarkable progress. From receiving scores in the 70s in 2022, it made a quantum jump in 2023.

□ While the city government’s dedication to 'Busan, a Global Hub City' and 'Busan, Your Home for Today and Beyond' is acknowledged worldwide, many institutes have also shown positive views of Busan Metropolitan City.


□ Busan Metropolitan City’s recent rankings in multiple city brand indices testify to its growing brand value.

○ It has made significant strides and moved to its highest position ever in assessment indices by Z/YEN, a commercial think tank: 27th out of 121 (9th in Asia) in the Global Financial Centres Index and 14th out of 79 (3rd in Asia) in the Smart Centres Index.

○ The World’s Best Cities Report 2024 by Resonance Consultancy, a reputable advisor in real estate, tourism, and economic development, dubbed Busan Metropolitan City the ‘Miami of South Korea’ and ranked it 67th out of 270 candidates, which was the city’s first appearance.
