Busan Signs MOU for the Successful Hosting of the 'ISI World Statistics Congress 2027
□ On April 22 at 10:30 a.m., the city of Busan announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the International Statistical Institute, Statistics Korea, and the Korean Statistical Society for the successful hosting of the '2027 International Statistical Institute (ISI) World Statistics Congress (WSC)' in the International Conference Room of Busan City Hall.
○ The signing ceremony was attended by Mayor Park Heong-joon, Fabrizio Ruggeri, the incoming President of the International Statistical Institute, Lee Hyoung-il, the Commissioner of Statistics Korea, and Kim Donguk, the President of the Korean Statistical Society, with each representing the contracting organizations.

□ The '66th International Statistical Institute (ISI) World Statistics Congress (WSC)' to be held in Busan in 2027 is the Olympics of statistics, held every two years since 1887, gathering statisticians from around the globe. The decision to host the congress in Busan was unanimously decided by the International Statistical Institute in July 2023, marking the second time Korea has achieved this honor, 26 years after Seoul last hosted in 2001.

□ Particularly, with the successful attraction of this large-scale international conference, which expects participation from over 3,000 members, Busan aims to elevate its status as an international exhibition (convention) city. It anticipates generating over 100 billion KRW in direct economic effects through accommodation, tourism, and other activities in store for the approximately 3,500 domestic and international participants, thereby stimulating the local economy and enhancing the city's brand.
□ The city is actively pursuing data-driven administration as a core initiative, compiling and providing 25 types of public statistics and preparing services for citizens to share, analyze, and utilize data through the 'Busan Big Data Innovation Center' and the 'Busan-style Data Integration Platform' by March 2025.
□ Mayor Park Heong-joon expressed, “Through this agreement, we will successfully host the 2027 World Statistics Congress, share the statistical and data development achievements of Korea and Busan accumulated over the past 26 years with the world, and strive to make Busan a leading global city on data.“
