□ Busan Igidae Park will transform into a world-class culture & art park!

□ The city of Busan has announced that Igidae Park will be developed into a world-class culture & art park through a basic plan to integrate the park into the surrounding natural and ecological environment.

□ Igidae, with its superb natural scenery, is loved as an eco-tourism attraction, offering coastal walkways with beautiful views mingling the seaside cliffs and the blue sea.

○ After the government’s policy of opening up military bases along the coastline in 1997, the park area was removed from the military reservations list and returned to the citizens of Busan. With the introduction of the Igidae Coastal Walkway Development Project in 2005, the magnificent coastal views became available for everyone to enjoy. Since its recognition as a National Geopark in 2013, the park has been loved as an eco-tourism attraction.

○ Thanks to the passing of the Sunset Regulation for Urban Parks in 2020, the dilapidated park received an investment of 73.7 billion KRW for the repurposing of 712,000㎡ of private land in the park over a span of five years from 2019 to June of this year.

□ With the completion of the subsidization for the private land in Igidae Park, the city of Busan has pondered ways to make use of Igidae’s natural landscape covering 1.25 million ㎡, including a 4.7km coastal walkway leading from Oryukdo Islets to the Dongsaengmal Trail. As a result, the city has decided to create a culture & art park as a world-class attraction site to improve the quality of citizens’ life while preserving and utilizing Igidae’s natural ecological environment.

○ The city plans to develop Igidae into a world-class attraction where the sea and surrounding nature are all harmonized together without damaging the ecological environment, as has been done at the Naoshima Art Museum in Japan, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and the Museum Insel Hombroich in Germany.

□ As such, the city will push forward with the establishment of a basic plan for Igidae Art Park. The park will be constructed based on the following three strategies: ❶ a park where Igidae itself becomes art ❷a classy art museum that strives to be one with the natural environment ❸a park where artistic and cultural content are on display to line the forest trails. “We will create a harmonious Igidae Art Park.”

○ The city plans to establish the basic plan by gathering opinions from Busan’s citizens and experts from various fields, including cultural arts, academia, and civil society by the end of 2024.

○ The city plans to assess Igidae’s feasibility through an in-depth study and analysis and prepare a framework for the creation of Igidae Art Park where the ecological environment will be combined with culture & art.

□ Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon said, “It is time to move forward with a world-class cultural maritime city by connecting the “Marine Leisure Tourism Belt”, stretching from Gwangalli to the Haeundae area considered Busan’s top marine tourism area, with the “Marine Convention Culture Belt” starting at Busan North Port and growing fast in preparation for the World Expo.” He added, “This basic plan for Igidae Art Park will become the starting point for nurturing Busan’s cultural artists and developing culture and art in Busan, as well as providing world-class cultural opportunities to citizens.” He closed by saying, “The city will take a leap forward to become a world-class cultural, tourism, and eco-friendly city through leveraging Igidae’s natural conditions.”
