Busan Metropolitan City and Kyobo Book Centre will jointly host a reading marathon competition to promote Busan's bid to host the 2030 World Expo.

The city announced on Feb. 28 that it will jointly hold the "Reading Marathon Competition for Busan's 2030 World Expo Bid" (unofficial translation) with Kyobo Book Centre from March 13-Oct. 31.

Participants can complete a “metaphorical” 42.195-km race consisting of eight courses by reading 43 books, as finishing one book is deemed running one kilometer.

While competitors can choose 42 books they want to read, they are required to read "Expo: Exhibition of Innovation” (unofficial translation), written by Oh Ryong.

To participate in the event, people must apply for a journal from Kyobo Book Centre's Busan branch or that in Centum City in Busan to write a book report for finishing each course of the marathon.

In order to introduce the charms and tourism resources of the candidate city for the World Expo in 2030, the marathon has been organized under the theme of "Eight tourist destinations in Busan," which were put on a list of the nation's top 100 tourist attractions for 2023-24 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The first 42 people to finish the race will receive a certificate and a medal, while each individual course also offers subsidies for buying books to the 50 participants who finish first.

Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon said, "Since this year is important as the host city of the 2030 World Expo will be announced, various civic participation events through bilateral collaborations between the private and public sector are currently underway."

"We will keep presenting various participation programs like this competition, in order to provide a unique experience related to the 2030 World Expo to citizens and to share a bond with them to host the event," he added.
