More than 118 paths and walkways under development
Busan City has unveiled “Green Way” plans to transform itself into a “walkable” city by developing dozens of pedestrian-friendly, car-free paths and trails along area shores, forests and rivers.
The city held a ceremony on May 7 at Millak Subyeon(water-front) Park to announce the project. It also held a “Walking with Busan City’s Mayor” event on a 12.5 kilometer course running from Millak Subyeon Park to Gwangalli Beach, Igidae, the Oryuk Islets and Baekunpo Sports Park.
The 43.7 billion won ($34.9 million) project, dubbed “Green Way,” involves building paths where pedestrians can safely walk, enjoy nature and breathe in all of the best that Busan has to offer. The first phase of construction is expected to be completed sometime in November.
In an effort to become a “walkable” city, Busan is developing paths along forests, rivers and beaches. Above, a walking event held on May 24.
The “Green way” project will use funds that are part of government’s Heemang Geunro Project that creates employment to the unemployed. Under the plan, Busan will build 118 walkways and paths, including 10 along seashores, 31 along riversides and 77 along wooded areas.
The seashore trails will wind through the Seo-gu District’s South Port area, the Gangseo-gu District’s Cheonga-dong area and the Saha-gu District’s Dusongbando.
The riverside paths run along Turtle Walk Road - or the Geobuki Geureumgil - at Buk-gu District Nakdongno as well as Samnak Park in Sasang-gu District and Flower Road near the Jwagwang stream in the Gijang-gun County.
Other paths will be developed on Mt. Gubong in Dong-gu District and Mulmangol in Yeonje-gu District.
The second phase, which begins next year, involves connecting all the shore walks together by 2011.
