Busan Development Institute has selected the ‘Top 10 News Stories of 2013 in Busan’ from five separate categories that have had a very positive effect on the city’s development this year. The list includes Busan-based products, policies, people and organizations, architecture as well as companies. Most notably, Busan-based products feature prominently on the list of nationwide hit products - reflecting regional strengths in the area. The stories have been chosen based on the recommendations of experts.① Yeongdo Bridge serves as a bascule bridge once again after 47 years. The bridge which connects Jung-gu and Yeongdo Island, first opened on November 23, 1934, as the first of its kind in Korea. However, due to increased traffic volumes in the downtown area, the bridge ceased to act as a bascule bridge in 1966. In 2007, work began on a project to restore the bridge and it was successfully reopened on November 28, 2013. The bridge is now lifted once a day at noon for 15 minutes. It takes about two minutes for the 31 meter long, 590 ton bridge to be lifted to a 75-degree angle.
② Bupyeong Kkangtong Night Market in Jung-gu opened on October 29, 2013 and has become the first permanent night market in Korea. The number of visitors reaches a daily average of 3,000 throughout the week with the weekend average hitting 5,000. It has become one of the must see destinations in the city and is very popular among Japanese and Chinese tourists. The night market will be expanded to 300 meters in length with roughly 100 vendor stalls by April 2014.
③ The Maersk McKinney-Moller, the world’s biggest container ship visited Busan Port on July 15, 2013. The ship’s visit reinforced the City of Busan’s reputation as a major logistics hub in Northeast Asia. The first of Maersk’s Triple E class, the Maersk McKinney-Moller is able to load 18,000 6 m containers. The ship is 400 meters long and 59 meters wide.
④ The Sanbokdoro Ren aissance Project or “Hillside Road Renaissance Project” as it is known in English became a model of urban regeneration and is featured in some of the world’s leading media outlets like CNN a nd NHK.
⑤ Choi Min-sik, a documentary photographer, died at the age of 85 on February 12, 2013.
He captured candid moments of people's daily lives on the streets of Busan since 1957.
⑥ “부산은 넓다 (Buasn is wide),” a book to educate people on the values and identity of the City of Busan was published.
⑦ “Flying Police Car,” a piece of installation artwork from designer, Lee Je-seok is exhibited and displays a flying police car breaking through a wall to quickly arrive on the scene, depicting Busan police officers’ strong sense of duty.
⑧ “CATs,” a performance space made out of large containers opened in the plaza of Sasang Station, Metro line 3. CATs is short for Container Arts Terminal Sasang Indie Station.
The space will be used for various cultural events, multicultural festivals and indie performances
⑨ The XXVII IUSSP International Population Conference was held from August 26 ？ 31, 2013 at BEXCO. The success of the conference helped to propel the City of Busan up the MICE rankings.
⑩ POKO PANG, a mobile game developed by a Busan-based game company ranked 2nd in the Google store in Japan and 1st in Apple stores in 10 countries including Singapore and Hong Kong.
