Celebrities in the country have come out to support Busan's bid to host the 2030 World Expo.
Busan Metropolitan City on March 3 said it will release a video series featuring about 100 famous figures to back the city's bid. Titled "2030 World Expo Relay Cheering Video Celebs: 100" (unofficial translation), the project features figures from a wide range of fields including the K-pop girl group Itzy and film director Yoon Je-kyoon, whose works include "Ode to My Father" (2014) and "Haeundae" (2009).
The videos were made to attract a massive promotional boom and raise enthusiasm for the bid before an inspection team from the International Bureau of Expositions visits Korea early next month.
About 100 famous figures from diverse fields such as singers, actors, athletes and movie directors formed 38 teams and sent messages expressing their hope for Busan to land the right to host the World Expo.
A video will be uploaded every Friday from March 3 to April 21 by the Bid Committee for World Expo 2030 Busan on its online social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Certain videos will be released as shorts of under a minute each and uploaded to YouTube.
The first video released on March 3 features five teams: girl groups Viviz and Classy, actors Lee So-yeon and Lim Ho and ballroom dancer Park Ji-woo. Each of them expressed hope for Busan to successfully land the 2030 World Expo.
Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon said, "As the effects of Hallyu (Korean Wave) on global cultural content transcend K-pop and extend to Korean culture and arts in general, we anticipate that the cheering videos featuring celebrities who lead their respective fields will be a big help in landing the 2030 World Expo."
