The City of Busan has announced that it will host the "Lights On! Busan- Hokkaido” as a landmark lighting event of symbolic colors of the two cities on December 16, 2021.
The city is hosting the event to strengthen ties between sister and friendship cities to get over the limitations on face-to-face exchanges by expanding sustainable untact exchanges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hokkaido, northernmost of the four main islands of Japan, possesses unique winter views covered with snow and is a famous tourist attraction. The city of Busan signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Hokkaido on December 14, 2005. Since then the two cities have continuously promoted exchanges.
To celebrate the relationship between Busan and Hokkaido, the lights of Busan's landmarks, including Gwangandaegyo, Busan Cinema Center and Busan Tower, changed to green, Hokkaido’s representative color, while the Sapporo TV Tower in Hokkaido turned blue, the color of Busan, on December 16, 2021.
