In order to keep abreast of an increasingly growing number of sporting events and to modernize existing, outdated athletic facilities in Busan, Busan Metropolitan City set forth construction plans for the Busan Sports Complex in 1979. Since the construction began, the city has added a gymnastics gym in July 1984, and in April 1989, built a super-modern indoor gym, baseball ground, indoor training center(Gym in commemoration of Olympic medalist, Yang Jeong-Mo) that meets international standards, and finished by completing an indoor swimming pool, tennis court, archery facility and roller skating rink. The facilities provide a clear-cut enhancement to Busan athletic culture. In particular, for the arrangement of the 2002 Asian Games, the construction of the main stadium began in March 1996 and was completed in September 2001.
